Care for Your Hair With These Heat Protectant Products
Love styling your hair with hot tools? Big fan of the blow dry? But not always (or…ever!) using heat protectant? Yep, it’s time to make some changes. If you want healthy hair that is moisturised and nourished, then heat protection sprays and products are a must before styling with hot tools.
Why are heat protectant products important?
Yes, our hair might not feel the heat like our skin does (and with styling temperatures reaching 230°C and beyond, thank goodness it doesn’t), but that doesn’t mean it isn’t being damaged or that we shouldn’t protect it against the heat - think of it in the same way as using sunscreen for your skin.
So, how does heat actually damage your hair?
It’s pretty common knowledge that overusing hot styling tools and hair dryers can leave your hair dry and brittle, but have you ever wondered how heat actually causes damage to your hair?
Essentially, heat can strip your hair of its natural oil, drying it out and changing its protein structure which can lead to the cuticles opening leaving your hair prone to further damage. The result is frizz, weakened ends and, for colour-treated hair, dullness and fading. Ouch.
How do heat protectants work?
Heat protectants work as a buffer between your hair and the heat, stopping the cuticle from coming into contact with the extreme heat and wrapping the strands with protective ingredients such as argan oil to ensure moisture is locked in, which helps to seal the cuticles and prevent the dreaded frizz.
Remember though…
There’s only so much protection that heat protection products can provide, so give your hair the best chance of being healthy by regularly giving it a break from heat styling and blow drying (and don’t forget the weekly nourishing hair masks).
