Ceramic vs Titanium Plate Technologies: Which Hot Tool is Best for Your Hair

Chances are you’ll have seen by now the majority of straighteners feature either ceramic or titanium plates, but have you ever stopped and thought about what the differences are between the two and which one is best for your hair type?

No? That’s where we come in, we’ve broken it down so you can see the pros and cons of both ceramic and titanium plated hot styling tools.

What are ceramic plates and how do they work?

Ceramic plates are made of materials such as clay and work by creating infrared heat that heats the hair shaft from the inside out.

What are the benefits of ceramic hair straighteners?

Ceramic plates heat up evenly, meaning that you have consistent heat over your hair so you don’t need to choose such a high heat, and less heat means less hair damage.

Since they’re gentle they are brilliant for fine or already damaged hair.

Ceramic plates create negative ions which help to combat the positive ions that cause your hair cuticle to open, meaning you can style your hair and fight frizz.

Since hair is heated from the inside out, more moisture is kept locked in, to keep your hair healthy.

And what are the cons?

They can be more expensive than titanium plated heat tools.

Fully ceramic plates can be quite delicate so you’re going to want to protect them when you’re travelling with them and try not to drop them!

As ceramic can be more expensive and is more fragile than titanium you might find that the heat tools you bought are just coated in ceramic and are metal underneath (similar to how silver or gold plated jewelry works) which can be exposed if the ceramic plates chip.

They can take longer to heat up than titanium plates but we’re talking the difference between 10 and 30 seconds. That said when you’re late in the morning…

Thicker or curlier hair? These might be too gentle for you.

What are titanium plates and how do they work?

Made from the metal titanium, these plates work by heating the surface of the hair, and straightening your hair from the outside in.

What are the benefits of titanium plated heat styling tools?

They heat up more quickly than ceramic plates.

They’re also more durable and tend to be more lightweight than the ceramic alternatives, so if you’re travelling and want to stick to that luggage weight limit you know which ones to pack (they’re also less likely to break in your bag).

They are great for curlier, thicker or more stubborn hair.

And what could be improved?

Heat isn’t always distributed evenly and hotspots can cause damage especially if you have fine hair.

Inconsistent heat throughout the plates can mean you need to pass the tools over your hair more to get even results.

They might not fight frizz as well as ceramic plates.
